Discover more about Vat Phou

Vat Phou, also known as Wat Phu or Wat Phou, meaning 'mountain temple', is a ruined Khmer Hindu temple complex built under the Khmer Empire. Located near Champasak at the foot of Mount Phu Passak, the temple was initially dedicated to Shiva, one of the principal deities of Hinduism. The mountain itself was once called Lingaparvata due to a pillar-like stone formation resembling Shiva's linga. Construction of Vat Phou began as early as the 5th or 6th century, with significant additions in the 10th and 11th centuries. The most important parts were built in the 12th century, under King Suryavarman II, who was also responsible for the construction of Angkor Wat. The temple complex was designed with a unique structure, aligning elements to a shrine where a linga was bathed in water from a mountain spring. The site's connection to water is a recurring theme in its design and mythical origins. In the 13th century, Vat Phou transitioned into a Buddhist monastery, and it remains a place of worship for local Buddhists today. This blend of Hindu and Buddhist imagery creates a unique cultural landscape. The temple complex includes several structures, such as the main sanctuary with antique Buddha images, intricately carved lintels, and courtyards. Two large boulders near the sanctuary are engraved to resemble an elephant and a crocodile. Today, visitors can explore the serene grounds, appreciate the ancient Khmer architecture, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding plains and the Mekong River. The site offers a tranquil alternative to the more crowded temples of Angkor, allowing for a more intimate experience with history and culture.
