The Monument For The Fishermen And Sailors Lost At Sea, located in Liepāja's Seaside Park, is a moving tribute to the fishermen and sailors who have perished at sea. Designed by architect Gunārs Asaris and sculptor Alberts Terpilovskis, the monument was erected in 1977 with funding from LBORF and the fishing kolhoz Boļševiks. The monument features a bronze sculpture of a woman looking out towards the sea, symbolizing the wait for the return of those lost. The 11-meter high V-shaped pedestal is covered in Saaremaa dolomite. In 2000, a memorial plate was added to the monument's base, dedicated to the American pilots whose aircraft was shot down by Soviet forces near Liepāja in 1950. The aircraft, a US Navy PB4Y-2 Privateer, was downed on April 8, 1950. The monument is often called "Vēja Māte" (Mother of Wind) by locals, a place to meet before heading to the beach. It serves as a reminder of Liepāja's rich maritime history and the sacrifices made by those who sailed the Baltic Sea.
