Durbes Kaujas Vieta marks the location of the Battle of Durbe, a crucial medieval battle fought on July 13, 1260. This battle saw the Samogitians decisively defeat the joint forces of the Teutonic Knights from Prussia and the Livonian Order. The victory was a major blow to the Teutonic Order, resulting in the deaths of around 150 knights, including prominent figures like Livonian master Burkhard von Hornhausen and Prussian land marshal Heinrich Botel. The battleground is located approximately 23 kilometers east of Liepāja, near Durbe in present-day Latvia. The landscape surrounding the site provides a peaceful setting that contrasts sharply with the intense conflict that once occurred here. Visitors can explore the area, reflect on the historical events, and appreciate the natural beauty of Durbe City. The memorial site features a commemorative stone, symbolizing the victory of the Samogitians over the crusaders in the Battle of Durbe. The stone was brought from Žemaitija and installed on the 750th anniversary of the battle. The battle's outcome led to a widespread uprising in Courland and Prussia, supported by Lithuanians and Samogitians. Although the Teutonic Order eventually regained control over lost territories, the southern parts of Courland and Zemgale remained lost to them. While there are no organized tours, the site is accessible for self-guided exploration, with information available for visitors of all ages. The Durbes Kaujas Vieta serves as a reminder of the medieval conflicts that shaped the region and offers a unique opportunity to connect with Latvia's historical landscape.
