The Ruins of Tyre, located on the southern coast of Lebanon, are a captivating testament to the city's rich history as a major Phoenician seaport. This UNESCO World Heritage site invites visitors to explore the remnants of a civilization that flourished for millennia. Founded around 2750 BCE, Tyre rose to prominence as a maritime and commercial hub, establishing trade routes across the Mediterranean. The archaeological site is divided into two main areas: Al-Bass and Al-Mina. Al-Bass features a well-preserved Roman hippodrome, one of the largest and best-preserved of its kind, where chariot races once thrilled spectators. The site also includes a grand necropolis with a monumental causeway and a Roman triumphal arch dating back to the 2nd century AD. Al-Mina, once an island, reveals remnants of Tyre's Phoenician port, with streets paved with Roman and Byzantine mosaics. Here, you can also find the ruins of a large public Roman bathhouse. As you wander through the ruins, imagine the bustling harbors, grand temples, and vibrant city life that once defined Tyre. The city's strategic location made it a melting pot of cultures, with influences from the Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, and Crusaders.
