Discover more about City Museum of Lindau

The City Museum of Lindau, or Stadtmuseum Lindau, is located in the heart of Lindau on the island of Lindau (Insel Lindau) in Lake Constance. The museum is housed in the Haus zum Cavazzen, a baroque townhouse built in 1729/30 for the Seutter von Loetzen family by Jakob Grubenmann. The Haus zum Cavazzen is considered one of the most beautiful baroque townhouses in the Lake Constance region. The museum's collection includes paintings and sculptures from the 15th to the 19th century, furniture from the Gothic to Art Nouveau periods, handicrafts, and documents on the town's history. Visitors can also see historical toys and mechanical musical instruments. Highlights of the collection include the late Gothic panel painting Lindauer Beweinung (Lindau Lamentation) from around 1420 and a Madonna statue from the workshop of Hans Multscher. Two well-preserved mortuary tablets of the 17th century, formerly in the Aeschacher cemetery, are also noteworthy. The museum was founded in 1889 and was first located in the Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus). In 1929, Ludwig Kick donated the Haus zum Cavazzen to the city of Lindau to house the museum. The museum opened in its current location in 1930. The museum is currently closed for extensive renovation since 2018, but it reopened on May 17/18, 2025.
