Discover more about Hängebrücke über die Argen

Spanning the Argen River between Kressbronn and Langenargen, the Hängebrücke über die Argen stands as a testament to late 19th-century engineering. Constructed between 1896 and 1897, under the reign of King Wilhelm II of Württemberg, this suspension bridge is not only a vital link between the two towns but also a captivating historical landmark. Before the bridge's construction, crossing the Argen River was a significant challenge, often requiring a lengthy detour. The bridge's completion in 1897 greatly improved regional connectivity. The bridge is 72 meters in length and 6.2 meters wide. Its design, inspired by the iron Danube bridge in Budapest, was led by Karl von Leibbrand and executed by the Maschinenfabrik Esslingen. The bridge's construction was a marvel of its time, featuring no supporting pillars in the riverbed, thus avoiding the destructive floods that had plagued earlier structures. The construction costs amounted to 13,681 Mark. The bridge opened on January 25, 1898. Today, the Hängebrücke is open only to pedestrians and cyclists, offering a peaceful experience with picturesque views. The bridge provides access to hiking and cycling trails along the Argen, allowing visitors to explore the natural beauty of the Bodensee region.
