Discover more about City Museum of Lindau

The City Museum of Lindau, or Stadtmuseum Lindau, is a cultural institution located in the heart of Lindau, Bavaria, on the island in Lake Constance. It is housed in the Haus zum Cavazzen, one of the most beautiful baroque townhouses in the Lake Constance region, built in 1729/30. The museum's origins trace back to the late 19th century when a local association sought to preserve and share the city's history and culture. The first museum opened in the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) in 1890, and the collections moved to the Cavazzen in 1930. The building itself was donated to the city by Lindau industrialists Ludwig and Lydia Kick in 1929 with the express purpose of housing the museum. The Stadtmuseum Lindau preserves artifacts related to Lindau's history, showcasing the city's development and the lives of its citizens. The collection includes paintings and sculptures from the 15th to the 19th century, furniture from the Gothic to Art Nouveau periods, handicrafts, historical toys, and mechanical musical instruments. One of the highlights is the late Gothic panel painting Lindauer Beweinung (Lindau Lamentation) from around 1420. Since 2010, the museum has also hosted special exhibitions of international standing, including works by Picasso. The museum is currently closed for extensive renovation and redesign since 2018, but it reopened on May 17/18, 2025.
