Discover more about City Museum of Lindau

The City Museum of Lindau, or Stadtmuseum Lindau, is a cultural gem nestled in the heart of Lindau's island. Located in the stunning baroque building known as the 'Haus zum Cavazzen' on the Marktplatz, the museum offers visitors a deep dive into the history, art, and culture of Lindau and the Lake Constance region. The 'Haus zum Cavazzen' itself is a significant historical landmark. Built in 1729/30 for the Seutter von Loetzen family, the building is a prime example of baroque architecture in the Lake Constance area. Designed by Swiss architect Jakob Grubenmann, the house stands as a testament to Lindau's resilience after a devastating fire in 1728. In 1929, the industrialist Ludwig Kick donated the building to the city to house a local history museum, which opened in 1930. The museum's collection includes paintings and sculptures from the 15th to the 19th centuries, furniture from the Gothic to Art Nouveau periods, handicrafts, and documents related to the town's history. Highlights include the late Gothic panel painting 'Lindauer Beweinung' (Lindau Lamentation) from around 1420 and a Madonna statue from the workshop of Hans Multscher. The museum also features historical toys and mechanical musical instruments, adding a whimsical touch to the exhibits. Currently, the museum is closed for extensive renovation and redesign since 2018, but it was reopened on May 17/18, 2025.
