    Discover more about Pulverturm

The Pulverturm, located on the westernmost point of Lindau Island, is a captivating historical site with a rich and varied past. Constructed in 1508, the tower initially served as a crucial component of Lindau's city defenses. Its strategic position was essential for protecting the town from potential threats. In later years, the Pulverturm was repurposed as a storage facility for gunpowder, giving rise to its present name. The tower underwent modifications in 1629, including lowering its roof by two meters to enhance its resilience against attacks. Remarkably, the Pulverturm withstood the Thirty Years' War unscathed, a testament to its solid construction and strategic design. At the turn of the 20th century, the tower was transformed into a summer residence for Lindau's mayor, Dr. Heinrich Schützinger. Architect Friedrich von Thiersch oversaw the conversion, adding a recreation room and staircase within the tower's two-meter-thick walls. Today, the Pulverturm is owned by the Lindau public utility company and is available for rent for conferences and celebrations. While the interior is not generally open to tourists, the exterior of the Pulverturm remains a striking sight, offering stunning views of Lake Constance and the surrounding Alps.
