Discover more about St. Martinsplatz

St. Martinsplatz, nestled in the heart of Chur's car-free Old Town, is a captivating square that serves as a focal point for both locals and visitors. This historic square lies midway between the Obertor and Untertor towers, marking a key point on the city's ancient north-south transit route. The square is named for the prominent St. Martin's Church, a late-Gothic building that was originally built in the 8th century. The church, rebuilt after a fire in 1464, was central to the Reformation in Chur starting in 1523. Inside, visitors can admire three stained glass windows created in 1919 by artist Augusto Giacometti, depicting the Christmas story. In front of the church stands the Martinsbrunnen, a fountain dating back to 1716. Its basin is adorned with signs of the zodiac, and the fountain remains largely in its original state. St. Martinsplatz is a vibrant hub, hosting various cultural events, markets, and performances throughout the year. Quaint cafes and shops line the square, offering a perfect setting to relax and soak in the surroundings.
