History of Johor

The Sultanate of Johor was established in the early 16th century. It was founded by Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah II after the fall of the Malacca Sultanate to the Portuguese in 1511. The Sultanate played a crucial role in the regional politics and trade networks of the Malay Peninsula and the surrounding maritime areas.
Throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, Johor faced numerous challenges from European colonial powers. The Portuguese attempted to control the region, but failed to establish a strong foothold. Later, the Dutch formed an alliance with Johor in 1641, leading to the expulsion of the Portuguese from Malacca. This alliance marked a significant shift in the power dynamics of the region.
In the late 17th and early 18th centuries, the Bugis people from Sulawesi played an influential role in Johor's politics. They were instrumental in supporting the local sultanate against external threats and internal conflicts. Their influence is still evident in the culture and heritage of Johor today.
By the 19th century, Johor came under British influence. In 1819, the British established a trading post in Singapore, which was then part of the Johor Sultanate. The Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824 further solidified British control over the region. Johor was officially recognized as a British protectorate in 1885, although it retained a degree of autonomy under its sultan.
Sultan Abu Bakar, who ruled from 1862 to 1895, is often credited with modernizing Johor. He introduced various administrative reforms, developed infrastructure, and established diplomatic relations with other nations. Sultan Abu Bakar is fondly remembered as the 'Father of Modern Johor.'
