History of Kedah

Kedah, historically known as Kataha, is one of the oldest civilizations in Southeast Asia, dating back to the 6th century. The region was part of the ancient Hindu-Buddhist kingdom and served as a crucial trading port on the maritime Silk Road. Archaeological findings at sites such as Sungai Batu reveal advanced iron smelting activities and well-planned urban settlements.
In the 12th century, Kedah witnessed the arrival of Islam. The transition from Hindu-Buddhist practices to Islam was gradual but significant. This period marked the establishment of the Kedah Sultanate, one of the earliest Muslim sultanates in the Malay Peninsula. Sultan Mudzaffar Shah I is traditionally considered the first Muslim ruler of Kedah.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, Kedah was a contested region influenced by both the Siamese (Thai) and the British. Kedah was under Siamese suzerainty and paid tribute to the Siamese kingdom. The Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909 eventually placed Kedah under British control, integrating it into the British Malaya colony.
