Car
If you're driving, you can access the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal by taking I-270 S from Washington, D.C. After about 30 miles, take the exit for US-28 N toward Darnestown. Continue on US-28 N for about 5 miles until you reach the intersection with MD-117. Turn left onto MD-117 W and follow the signs to the C&O Canal. The main entrance to the park is located at 1850 Dual Highway, Hagerstown, MD 21740. There is no entry fee for the park, but be aware that parking may be limited in certain areas.

Public Transportation
To reach the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal via public transportation, first take the MARC Train from Washington, D.C. to the Brunswick Line. Disembark at the Brunswick station. From there, you can take a local taxi or rideshare service to the canal entrance, which is approximately 2 miles away. Be prepared to pay for the taxi, which typically costs around $10-$15. Ensure to check the MARC Train schedule ahead of time for departure and return times.

For those who enjoy biking, the C&O Canal Towpath is a great option. If you are near a nearby town, such as Potomac, MD, you can bike directly to the Towpath, which runs parallel to the canal. Ensure you have a good map or GPS, as some sections require navigating local roads to access the Towpath. There’s no fee to access the Towpath, but check local bike rental shops if you need to rent a bike.
