    The First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site is located at 200 S Main St in St. Charles. From almost anywhere in the historic downtown area, it's easily accessible on foot. Simply head towards Main Street and look for the historic brick building. It's near the Missouri River and the Katy Trail State Park.

    St. Charles has limited public transportation options. However, if arriving by bus, the site is a short walk from the nearest bus stops along Main Street. Check local transit schedules for the most up-to-date routes and times. From the bus stop, walk towards the river, and the historic site will be on your left.

    If driving, navigate to 200 S Main St, St. Charles, MO 63301. Parking is available along Main Street and Riverside Drive, as well as in parking areas adjacent to the site. Parking is free. The First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site in St. Charles offers a glimpse into the state's early history. This Federal-style brick complex served as Missouri's first capitol from 1821 to 1826, while Jefferson City was being planned as the permanent capital. The site features 11 restored rooms that transport visitors back to when Missouri joined the Union. Exhibits showcase the state's early government, politics, and daily life. You can explore the governor's office, legislative chambers, and a dry goods store. Daily tours, led by knowledgeable guides, provide insights into the artifacts and their significance in Missouri's history. The building itself has a rich history. Brothers Charles and Ruluff Peck constructed two-thirds of the building between 1818 and 1819, operating a general store on the first floor. Chauncey Shepard, a carpenter, built the northernmost section around 1819, also using the first floor for his business. The second floor connected all three buildings, creating the space for the Senate, House of Representatives, a hallway, a committee room, and the governor's office.
