Discover more about First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site

The First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site in St. Charles offers a glimpse into Missouri's formative years. From 1821 to 1826, this Federal-style brick building served as the state's first capitol. During this time, the state's first legislators grappled with the issues of a young and growing Missouri. The site features 11 restored rooms, including the governor's office, senate and house chambers, and a general store. Exhibits showcase artifacts and stories from the 1820s, providing insights into the lives of early Missourians. Daily tours, led by knowledgeable guides, bring the history to life, explaining the significance of the building and the events that transpired within its walls. The building itself has an interesting history. Brothers Charles and Ruluff Peck constructed two-thirds of the building between 1818 and 1819, operating a general store on the first floor. Chauncey Shepard, a carpenter, built the northernmost section around 1819, also using the first floor for his business. The second floor connected all three buildings, creating the space needed for the state government. In November 1821, a session at this temporary capitol decided to make 'the City of Jefferson' the permanent seat of Missouri governance. Located near the Missouri River and the Katy Trail State Park, the First Missouri State Capitol is a cornerstone of the St. Charles Historic District.
