Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From Chișinău, take a marshrutka (minibus) from the Central Bus Station (Gara Centrală) to either Trebujeni or Butuceni. Marshrutkas leave approximately every 30 minutes. Look for placards indicating 'Butuceni', 'Trebujeni', or 'Orheiul Vechi'. A one-way ticket costs around 46 MDL. If you take a marshrutka to Trebujeni, be prepared for a 30-minute walk to the main Orheiul Vechi complex. A marshrutka to Butuceni will drop you closer, with only a 10-15 minute walk to the Cave Monastery after crossing a small bridge. From the drop-off point in Butuceni, follow the path leading uphill to the monastery.

  • Taxi/Ride-share

    A taxi or ride-share from Chișinău to Orheiul Vechi takes approximately 45-50 minutes. A round-trip taxi should cost around €40. Be sure to negotiate the price beforehand or use a ride-sharing app to get an estimated fare. Parking is available near the entrance to the Orheiul Vechi complex in Butuceni. From the parking area, it's a short walk to the main attractions.

    Once you arrive in Butuceni, cross the bridge over the Răut River. Follow the trail uphill for about 15 minutes to reach the Cave Monastery. The path is well-trodden but can be steep in some places. Continue along the ridge to see the Church of the Ascension of St. Mary. All exploration within the Orheiul Vechi complex is done on foot.

Orheiul Vechi, also known as Old Orhei, is a captivating open-air archaeological and historical complex located 60 km northeast of Chișinău, Moldova. Situated on a narrow bend of the Răut River, the reserve's landscape is defined by limestone cliffs and dramatic river gorges.
