History of Nikšić Field

Nikšić Field was the backdrop to one of the most significant battles in Montenegrin history, the Battle of Grahovo. This battle between the forces of Montenegro and the Ottoman Empire took place in 1858 and ended with a decisive Montenegrin victory. The outcome of the battle significantly enhanced Montenegro's reputation and was a precursor to its eventual recognition as an independent state in the Congress of Berlin in 1878.
The area of Nikšić Field has seen human activity since ancient times. During the Roman period, the field was part of the Roman province of Dalmatia.
