Getting to and around Tara River Canyon

How to get there

Tara River Canyon is reached by road from several directions rather than through a single entrance. Žabljak is the principal base for the Durmitor side and can be approached from Nikšić, Šavnik or Pljevlja, while Mojkovac offers access from the south-east via the wider Tara valley. The Đurđevića Tara Bridge lies on the regional road between Žabljak and Mojkovac. Podgorica is the nearest major air gateway for many international visitors, although the final journey is over mountainous roads. Pljevlja and Mojkovac are useful regional transport points, but services into the canyon itself are limited.

Transportation

A car is generally the most flexible way to connect the bridge, viewpoints, rafting areas and villages because the canyon is long and facilities are dispersed. Currency and Payment
Montenegro uses the euro, written as EUR, despite not being a member of the European Union. Card and contactless payment are common in larger hotels, restaurants and established tourism businesses, but smaller rural establishments and some activity providers may prefer cash. Cash machines are more likely in Žabljak, Mojkovac, Pljevlja and other substantial settlements than beside remote viewpoints or rafting access points. Carry enough euros for rural meals, transport, small purchases and services where electronic payment or a reliable mobile signal cannot be assumed.
Safety
The canyon combines steep terrain, exposed viewpoints, fast water and remote roads. Use particular care near edges, on uneven paths and around the river, and follow the instructions of qualified rafting guides. Mountain weather can change rapidly, with rain, low cloud and cooler conditions at altitude even when the valley is warm. Do not enter the water independently in rapids or attempt river activities outside established arrangements. Mobile coverage may be inconsistent in the gorge, so leave details of your route and expected return with someone when walking in less visited areas.

Call 112 in Montenegro for a general emergency and state whether police, fire or medical assistance is required. History of Tara River Canyon

A Limestone and Glacial Landscape

Tara River Canyon developed within the karst landscape of the Dinaric Alps, where soluble limestone, tectonic uplift and long-term river erosion produced steep walls, underground drainage and deeply incised valleys. The wider Durmitor region also bears evidence of glacial activity, including high mountain basins and landforms shaped by former ice. These geological processes long predate human settlement, but they explain the sharp contrast between the Tara’s narrow gorge, wooded slopes and the open plateaux above it.

Pastoral Communities and Mountain Routes

For centuries, communities in northern Montenegro used the Tara valley and surrounding uplands through seasonal pastoralism, forestry, small-scale farming and movement along mountain routes. Settlements remained dispersed because the canyon offered limited level ground, while higher plateaux supported grazing during the warmer months. The region’s cultural landscape reflects this relationship between village life, livestock and difficult terrain, with traditional foodways and rural customs shaped by the resources of the Durmitor mountains.

The Bridge at Đurđevića Tara

The Đurđevića Tara Bridge was constructed between 1937 and 1940 to carry the road across the canyon and connect communities on either side of the river. Its reinforced-concrete arches represented a major engineering achievement in a rugged and sparsely settled area. During the Second World War, the bridge became associated with the strategic importance of the mountain crossing and was damaged in the conflict before being rebuilt. It remains the canyon’s most recognisable human landmark.

National Park Protection

Durmitor National Park was established in 1952, bringing the Tara gorge and its surrounding mountain ecosystems into a protected landscape framework. Protection reflects the area’s geological features, forests, river habitats and high biodiversity, while also requiring visitors and local activities to operate with care.
