Getting There

Bus
To reach the Aratiatia Rapids Mid Viewpoint, start by heading to the Taupo bus terminal located on Tongariro Street. From there, take the Bus to Wairakei Village, which runs regularly. Once you arrive at Wairakei Village, you will need to walk approximately 2.5 kilometers (about 30 minutes) towards the Aratiatia Dam. Follow the signs for the Aratiatia Rapids. The viewpoint is located along the walking track just off SH1.

Bike
If you prefer biking, you can rent a bike from one of the local shops in Taupo. Head towards the Great Lake Cycle Trail and follow the signs directing you to Wairakei. Once you reach Wairakei Village, continue on SH1 towards the Aratiatia Dam. The cycling path is scenic, and the distance is about 7 kilometers one way, which should take around 30-40 minutes. Look for the signs to the viewpoint as you approach the dam.

For those who enjoy walking, you can start from the Taupo town center. Begin your journey by heading towards the lakefront and follow the path along Lake Taupo. Continue walking along the lakeside until you reach the Wairakei area. From there, follow the road signs directing you to the Aratiatia Dam. The total distance is approximately 14 kilometers, and it should take around 3 to 4 hours to walk to the viewpoint, depending on your pace.
