Chimneys Picnic Area, Great Smoky Mountains Travel Guide

Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, start by navigating to Gatlinburg, TN 37738. From Gatlinburg, follow US-441 North, also known as the Great Smoky Mountains Parkway. After approximately 6 miles, look for the signs directing you to the Chimneys Picnic Area. Turn left onto the Chimneys Picnic Area access road. The picnic area will be on your right after about 1 mile. Parking is available at the picnic area.

• Public Transportation

  For those using public transportation, take the Gatlinburg Trolley from various points within Gatlinburg. Make sure to check the trolley schedule for the route that goes towards the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. You will need to get off at the stop closest to the Chimneys Picnic Area. From there, it is about a 1-mile walk to the picnic area along the access road. Please wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for a short walk.

• Bicycle

  If you prefer to cycle, you can rent a bike in Gatlinburg and take the same route as if you were driving. Biking along US-441 North is an option, but be aware of traffic and ensure you have proper safety gear. Once you reach the Chimneys Picnic Area access road, it’s about a 1-mile ride to the entrance of the picnic area.

• Walking

  If you are already in the vicinity and wish to walk, you can hike from nearby trails or the main park areas. Be sure to have a map of the trails and follow signage that directs you towards the Chimneys Picnic Area. The access road is a straightforward path but be cautious of any vehicular traffic.
