Soccsksargen, officially the Philippines’ Region XII, occupies a broad and varied section of southern Mindanao. How to get there

General Santos International Airport, located in General Santos City, is the principal air gateway within Soccsksargen and has domestic connections that vary over time, commonly linking the region with Manila and other Philippine hubs. General Santos is also reachable by long-distance bus and road from Davao City, which lies outside the region and is a practical gateway for some itineraries. For destinations in the western and northern parts of the region, Cotabato Airport is outside Soccsksargen in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and may be useful depending on current services and security or road conditions. History of Soccsksargen

Early communities and archaeological heritage

The valleys, lakes and coastal routes of present-day Soccsksargen have long supported communities connected by farming, fishing, river travel and exchange. The Maitum anthropomorphic burial jars, discovered in Ayub Cave in Sarangani, provide important evidence of an ancient mortuary tradition and are among the region’s most significant archaeological finds. Their human-shaped forms reveal sophisticated ideas about death and identity, although the original cave context has been disturbed and many pieces are now held in museums. The archaeological record sits alongside continuing Indigenous traditions among peoples including the B'laan, T'boli and Teduray.

Pre-colonial trade and Islamic influence

Before Spanish rule reached the interior of southern Mindanao, communities were linked to wider networks along the coast, rivers and Lake Lanao–Cotabato sphere. Maguindanaon political and cultural influence was particularly important in the Cotabato basin, where Islam, trade and chiefly authority shaped social life. In upland and coastal areas, Indigenous societies maintained their own territories, languages and systems of exchange. These overlapping histories help explain why the modern region contains several distinct cultural traditions rather than a single regional identity.

Spanish and American-era incorporation

Spanish authority in Mindanao was uneven and faced sustained resistance from Muslim sultanates and other local communities. More systematic administrative and military incorporation developed during the American period, when new roads, settlements and agricultural schemes altered access to the interior. Later migration from other parts of the Philippines contributed to the growth of towns and farms in the Cotabato and South Cotabato plains. These changes brought new markets and institutions but also intensified competition over land, resources and political power.

Settlement, agriculture and the Cotabato frontier

During the twentieth century, government-led settlement and agricultural development transformed much of the Cotabato basin and surrounding valleys. Rice, corn, coconut, rubber, fruit and other crops became central to local economies, while roads connected rural communities with market towns. Koronadal grew as an administrative and commercial centre, and the wider area was reorganised through successive provincial and regional changes. The legacy is visible in the region’s productive plains, but also in continuing debates about ancestral land, land ownership and the rights of Indigenous communities.

Creation of Region XII and General Santos’s rise

The present regional framework emerged through late twentieth-century administrative changes, with South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos forming the core of Soccsksargen, also called Region XII. General Santos developed from a comparatively small settlement into a major urban and fishing centre, helped by port activity, canning and the expansion of the tuna industry. Its growth gave the region a strong commercial identity and linked southern Mindanao more closely to national and international seafood markets.

Contemporary cultural and economic transformation

Soccsksargen today combines large-scale agriculture, fisheries, manufacturing, domestic trade and a growing interest in nature and cultural tourism. General Santos remains associated with tuna, while highland communities in South Cotabato have brought greater attention to traditional weaving, lake environments and watershed protection. Tourism has also encouraged visits to Lake Holon, Lake Sebu, Asik-Asik Falls, Maitum and Sarangani’s beaches.
