History of Caraș-Severin

Caraș-Severin's history dates back to the Dacian era, where the region was inhabited by the Dacian tribes. The area was known for its fortified settlements, such as those found in the Orăștie Mountains. These settlements were centers of trade and culture, which later attracted the attention of the Roman Empire.
In 106 AD, the Roman Empire, under Emperor Trajan, conquered the Dacian Kingdom, incorporating the region into the province of Dacia. The Romans established several settlements and fortified camps, such as Tibiscum (near modern-day Caransebeș) and Ad Pannonios (near modern-day Mehadia). These sites served as important military and administrative centers, facilitating the Romanization of the local population.
During the medieval period, Caraș-Severin became part of the Banat of Severin, a frontier region of the Kingdom of Hungary. The Banat was a crucial defensive zone against the expanding Ottoman Empire. Fortresses such as the Fortress of Severin (Drobeta-Turnu Severin) were constructed to protect the area. The region also saw the rise of several monastic communities, contributing to the spread of Christianity and the cultural development of the area.
The Ottoman Empire occupied Caraș-Severin in the 16th century, integrating it into the Temeșvar Eyalet. Ottoman rule brought significant changes, including the introduction of new administrative structures and the spread of Islam. In the 18th century, the Habsburg Monarchy expelled the Ottomans and took control of the region. This period also saw the rise of nationalistic movements and efforts to promote Romanian culture and identity.
During World War II, Caraș-Severin was a site of significant military activity and suffered from occupation and conflict. After the war, the region became part of Communist Romania.
