Getting There

  • Walking

    From the Mount Rushmore National Memorial entrance, head south on SD-244. Continue walking until you reach a junction with the road that leads to the Black Hills. This will take approximately 30 minutes. Look for a sign indicating the direction to Sylvan Lake and Black Elk Peak Trail. Follow the road towards Sylvan Lake, which will be about 2 miles away. Once you reach Sylvan Lake, you will see the trailhead for Black Elk Peak Trail on the north side of the lake.

  • Biking

    If you have access to a bike, leave Mount Rushmore heading south on SD-244. After about 2 miles, you will come to a fork. Take the left fork towards Sylvan Lake. The ride will take roughly 15-20 minutes. Upon reaching Sylvan Lake, park your bike in the designated area and find the trailhead for Black Elk Peak Trail on the north side of the lake.

  • Public Transport

    While there is no direct public transport from Mount Rushmore to Black Elk Peak Trail, you can take a shuttle service to Keystone. From Mount Rushmore, walk to the shuttle stop located at the visitor center. The shuttle will take you to Keystone. Once in Keystone, you will need to walk about 1.5 miles to reach Sylvan Lake. Follow the road signs to Sylvan Lake, where you will find the Black Elk Peak Trailhead on the north side of the lake.
