Walking
Start from the Mount Rushmore National Memorial visitor center. Exit the park and head south on SD-244 for approximately 0.5 miles until you reach the junction with US-16. Turn right (west) onto US-16 and continue walking for about 4 miles. You will pass by several scenic spots, including the picturesque views of the Black Hills. Look for the signs directing you to Custer State Park. Once you reach the entrance to Custer State Park, continue walking into the park. The Sunday Gulch Trailhead is located within the park, about 1 mile past the entrance along the Sunday Gulch Road. Keep an eye out for trail markers indicating the trailhead.
Public Transit
From Mount Rushmore, take a bus or shuttle service towards Custer, SD. Confirm the schedule and stops in advance as they may vary. Once you arrive in Custer, ask the driver or check a local map for directions to Sunday Gulch Trailhead. It is approximately 7 miles from the town of Custer to the trailhead. You may need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service from Custer to reach the trailhead if public transit does not serve that area directly.
