If you're starting from the South Dakota State Capitol (500 E Capitol Ave, Pierre, SD 57501), head north on E Capitol Ave toward E Dakota Ave. Continue walking until you reach the intersection with S Pierre St. Turn left onto S Pierre St and continue until you reach E Sioux Ave. Turn right onto E Sioux Ave and walk until you reach the intersection with N 5th St. The Ancient Indian Fortress Historical Marker is located on the hillside along the Missouri River, approximately 1 mile from this intersection, near the riverbank.

Starting at the Pierre Recreation Center (800 W Dakota Ave, Pierre, SD 57501), take the bike path heading east toward the Missouri River. Follow the path along the river until you reach the intersection with N 4th St. Continue north on N 4th St until you reach E Sioux Ave. Turn left onto E Sioux Ave and proceed toward the river. The Ancient Indian Fortress Historical Marker is located on the hillside near the river approximately 1 mile from this point.
