Public Bus
Start at the Rapid City Transit Center located at 333 6th St, Rapid City, SD. Take the Route 1 bus towards the 'Meadowbrook' direction. You will need to transfer at the 'Custer' stop. Once on the bus towards Custer, enjoy the scenic ride for approximately 30 minutes. The bus will drop you off at the intersection of SD-87 and the entrance to Custer State Park. From there, it’s about a 2-mile walk to Needles Eye Tunnel. Follow SD-87 south until you reach MP 31, where you will find the tunnel.

Bicycle
If you are renting a bicycle in Rapid City, head towards the bike path that connects to the George S. Mickelson Trail. Ride south on the trail until you reach Custer. Once in Custer, follow the signs to SD-87. It is about a 20-mile ride, so ensure you have water and snacks. When you reach SD-87, continue south for approximately 2 miles until you arrive at Needles Eye Tunnel at MP 31.

Walking
If you are feeling adventurous and want to walk from Rapid City, start from the downtown area and head south on 5th St. Follow the path that leads to SD-16, then continue onto SD-87 towards Custer. This is a long trek, about 40 miles and would take several hours, so make sure to prepare adequately with plenty of water and snacks. After walking along SD-87, you will arrive at MP 31, where you will find the Needles Eye Tunnel.
