Once on the bus towards Custer, enjoy the scenic ride for approximately 30 minutes. The bus will drop you off at the intersection of SD-87 and the entrance to Custer State Park. From there, it’s about a 2-mile walk to Needles Eye Tunnel. Follow SD-87 south until you reach MP 31, where you will find the tunnel.

    If you are renting a bicycle in Rapid City, head towards the bike path that connects to the George S. Mickelson Trail. Ride south on the trail until you reach Custer. Once in Custer, follow the signs to SD-87. It is about a 20-mile ride, so ensure you have water and snacks. When you reach SD-87, continue south for approximately 2 miles until you arrive at Needles Eye Tunnel at MP 31.
