Medieval Foundations Amid Lake Hjälmaren

Stora Sundby Castle's story begins in the 13th century with a simple defensive fortification strategically positioned at the Hjälmaresund inlet on the northern shore of Sweden's fourth-largest lake, Lake Hjälmaren. This early structure, whose foundations remain visible in the adjacent oak park, served as a vital outpost during turbulent times. In 1364, it was besieged by King Albrekt of Mecklenburg in his battle against Magnus Eriksson for the Swedish throne, highlighting its role in medieval power struggles.By the 15th century, the original fort was abandoned, and a new castle rose on the site, perfectly situated by the water's edge. The lake, once even larger in the 14th century, enhanced the site's defensibility and allure, framing the castle in a timeless watery panorama.

Sparre Family's Renaissance Legacy

In the mid-16th century, the influential Sparre family transformed the site into Sundby House, a robust Renaissance stronghold completed around 1584 under Lars Siggesson Sparre and his son Erik Larsson Sparre. Lars, a prominent riksmarskalk to King Gustav Vasa, oversaw the construction of three towers, laying the groundwork for over three centuries of family stewardship.The Sparres enhanced the estate through generations. In the 17th century, riksjägmästare Axel Sparre commissioned Nicodemus Tessin the Elder and possibly Erik Dahlbergh for Baroque upgrades between 1660 and 1670, including the grand Knight's Hall. Despite confiscations during the 17th-century reduction and the Linköping Bloodbath, the family reclaimed and preserved their ancestral home.

Neo-Gothic Reinvention by the De Geers

The early 19th century brought dramatic change when Count Carl de Geer, one of Sweden's wealthiest men, acquired the estate for his daughter Charlotta and her husband, Count Baltzar von Platen. Dissatisfied with the modest Renaissance structure, Carl's wife Ulrika Sofia Sprengtporten envisioned a romantic medieval castle inspired by Sir Walter Scott's novels and Abbotsford House.Architect Peter Frederick Robinson provided neo-Gothic designs featuring pinnacles and towers. Master builder Abraham Nyström executed the 16-year project from 1832 to 1848, cladding the original walls in Norman-style grandeur while preserving interiors. The result: a fairy-tale castle symbolizing the calendar, completed just before Lake Hjälmaren's water levels were lowered in the 1880s.

Modern Era and Klingspor Residence

Since 1888, Stora Sundby has been home to the Klingspor family, marking the fourth generation in residence. The castle remains a private inhabited estate, blending daily life with historic preservation. Its romantic silhouette continues to captivate, evoking the noble knights and epic tales that inspired its redesign.

Enchanting Grounds and Natural Harmony

Beyond the castle, expansive parklands invite exploration. Wander rose-scented gardens, discover well-preserved rune stones, and view the ruins of earlier fortifications. A deer enclosure adds wildlife charm, while walking paths offer serene views of the lake and surrounding Södermanland countryside. The old orangery houses a café serving light lunches, enhancing visits with seasonal flavors.
