Travel Guide to Elephant Jungle Sanctuary

Getting There

• Songthaew

  From the center of Chiang Mai, head to the nearest Songthaew stop, typically around Chang Puak Gate or Thapae Gate. Look for a red Songthaew, which is a shared taxi. Tell the driver you want to go to Mae Wang, which is the district where the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary is located. The fare should be around 50-100 THB depending on your negotiation skills. The journey will take about 30-45 minutes. Get off at the Mae Wang area and ask locals or refer to your map for directions to the sanctuary, which is about 10-15 minutes away on foot.

• Tuk-Tuk

  Find a Tuk-Tuk in the city center, especially near tourist attractions like the Night Bazaar or Tha Phae Gate. Negotiate the price to Mae Wang District, aiming for around 400-600 THB for a one-way trip. The ride will take approximately 30-45 minutes. Once you reach Mae Wang, you may need to ask locals for the exact directions to the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary, as they can provide helpful guidance.

• Public Bus

  Locate the bus terminal in the old city or near the Night Bazaar. Look for a bus heading to Mae Wang. The bus fare is usually around 30-50 THB. Buses operate less frequently, so check the schedule in advance. The ride will take around 1 hour. Once you arrive in Mae Wang, you will need to walk or ask for directions to Elephant Jungle Sanctuary, which is about 1.5-2 km away.

• Bicycle Rental

  If you enjoy cycling, rent a bicycle from one of the rental shops in the city, especially near Nimmanhaemin or the old city. Take the route towards Mae Wang, which is approximately 20 km from the city center. Follow the signs to Mae Wang, and enjoy the scenic ride through the countryside. Once you reach Mae Wang, you can ask locals for directions to the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary, which is a short distance away.
