Historic Seat of Clan Donald
Armadale Castle was the 19th-century seat of the Macdonalds of Sleat, part of the mighty Clan Donald, one of Scotland’s largest and most influential clans. The original mansion house was built around 1790, with a grand Tudor-Gothic castle extension added in 1815 by architect James Gillespie Graham. After a devastating fire in 1855, the central section was rebuilt by David Bryce. The Macdonald family occupied the castle until 1925, after which it fell into ruin.
