Architectural Majesty Rooted in Scottish History
Invermark Castle stands as a formidable oblong tower house dating back to the 16th century, built on the foundations of an earlier 14th-century castle. Commissioned by the Lindsay family around 1526, the castle was conceived as a defensive bastion to control and deter Highland marauders in the rugged Angus region. Its design features include rounded corners, a corbelled parapet with a parapet walk, and two massive chimney stacks with windows that illuminate the garret. The castle was heightened in the early 17th century with an additional storey, a garret, and a two-storey angle tower, enhancing its imposing silhouette.Strategic Location and Historical Significance
Perched near the eastern shore of Loch Lee and close to the head of Glen Esk, Invermark Castle occupies a commanding position where Glen Lee and Glen Mark converge. This strategic location allowed it to guard the southern end of a key pass leading from Deeside, making it a critical point of control in the region. The castle also played a role in the turbulent history of the Lindsays; notably, David Lindsay, 9th Earl of Crawford, died here in 1558. The castle later sheltered figures such as James Carnegie, Lord Balnamoon, sought by government troops after the Battle of Culloden in 1746.Defensive Features and Interior Layout
The castle’s entrance is uniquely positioned at the first-floor level, accessible originally by a movable timber bridge or stair, now barred by an iron yett, making the interior virtually inaccessible to visitors. Inside, the entrance leads to a great hall with an adjoining small room. A wheel stair provided access to the vaulted basement, while a turnpike stair once connected the upper floors, which were subdivided for various uses. The castle’s robust defensive features, including thick stone walls and elevated entry, reflect its primary role as a fortress against raids.Surrounding Grounds and Preservation Status
Around the castle are the foundations of outbuildings to the east and south, remnants of the original estate structures. Some building materials were repurposed for local parish church construction. Invermark Castle is a Scheduled Monument, recognizing its national historical and architectural importance. The surrounding landscape of Glen Esk and Loch Lee enhances the castle’s dramatic setting, with natural beauty complementing the historic ruins.Visitor Experience and Accessibility
Though the castle’s interior is not accessible due to safety and preservation concerns, visitors can admire the exterior’s formidable presence and appreciate its historical context amid the tranquil, mountainous environment. The site is relatively remote, with limited mobile phone signal, adding to the sense of stepping back into a more rugged, ancient Scotland. Nearby walking paths offer opportunities for short scenic excursions, making Invermark Castle a rewarding detour for those exploring the Angus glens.Legacy of the Lindsay Family and Regional Heritage
The Lindsay family’s legacy is deeply embedded in Invermark Castle’s story, reflecting the clan’s influence in Angus during the medieval and early modern periods. The castle’s endurance through centuries of conflict and change encapsulates the turbulent history of Scottish borderlands and Highland relations. Today, Invermark Castle stands as a testament to Scotland’s architectural heritage and the enduring allure of its storied past.Iconic landmarks you can’t miss
