The Riverside Museum is housed in a striking, modern building designed by the renowned architect Dame Zaha Hadid. Its angular, wave-like structure on the banks of the River Clyde reflects the city’s maritime heritage and dynamic spirit. The museum’s architecture is not only visually impressive but also thoughtfully designed to enhance the visitor experience, with large windows framing views of the river and the adjacent historic tall ship Glenlee, which is currently under renovation but visible from the site.

Inside, the museum boasts a collection of over 3,000 transport-related objects ranging from bicycles and vintage cars to trams, buses, and steam locomotives. Highlights include a 100-ton Class 15F steam engine and an extensive array of ship models built in Clyde shipyards. The exhibits span Glasgow’s industrial and transport heritage, illustrating the evolution of travel and technology that shaped the city and beyond.

One of the museum’s standout features is the meticulously recreated section of Glasgow’s Kelvin Street as it appeared in 1938. This cobbled street scene includes period shops, houses, and even a subway station, all authentically furnished to transport visitors back in time. This immersive environment brings to life the daily experiences of Glaswegians from the early 20th century and offers a nostalgic glimpse into the city’s social history.

The Riverside Museum is designed to engage visitors of all ages with interactive displays and hands-on activities. Children and transport enthusiasts alike can explore simulators, try out exhibits like the Clive Sinclair C5 pedal car simulator, and enjoy educational play areas. The museum’s layout encourages exploration, with some exhibits best viewed from upstairs galleries that provide new perspectives on the collections below.

Entry to the museum is free, making it an accessible cultural destination for families and visitors on a budget. The site includes a café with views of the river and the tall ship, accessible toilets, a gift shop, and onsite parking (paid). The museum is fully wheelchair accessible, with drop-off points and facilities designed to accommodate visitors with mobility needs.

Open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm (11am start on Fridays and Sundays), the museum offers ample time for a 2–3 hour visit. Donations are welcomed to support the museum’s ongoing work. Visitors are encouraged to explore the upper floors for unique views of the main hall and to take their time wandering through the recreated street scene to fully appreciate the detailed storytelling.
