History of Eastern Shore

Before European colonization, the Eastern Shore of Virginia was inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Accomac and the Accohannock. These tribes thrived on the fertile lands and abundant waterways, practicing agriculture, fishing, and hunting. The indigenous communities had a rich culture, deeply connected to the land and the Chesapeake Bay.
In 1608, Captain John Smith, an English explorer, sailed into the Chesapeake Bay and documented his encounters with the indigenous peoples of the Eastern Shore. By 1614, English settlers had established themselves on the peninsula, marking the beginning of significant changes to the land and its people. The region's fertile soil and temperate climate made it ideal for agriculture, including tobacco farming.
In 1634, the Virginia Colony was divided into eight shires, including Accomack. In 1642, Northampton County was formed from the southern part of Accomack County. These counties became the administrative regions of the Eastern Shore, facilitating governance and development. The early settlers built plantations and engaged in trade, contributing to the economic growth of the area.
During the American Revolution, the Eastern Shore of Virginia played a strategic role due to its location and access to the Chesapeake Bay.
