Getting There

  • Car

    Assuming you are already in Mount Rainier National Park, drive to the Sunrise Visitor Center. From the center, take Sunrise Park Road. Follow the road to its end where you will find the parking lot at the Sunrise area. The parking lot is typically open from late June to mid-September, depending on snow conditions. There is a parking fee of $30 per vehicle for a seven-day pass; however, if you have an America the Beautiful Pass, this is accepted as well.

  • Hiking

    From the Sunrise parking lot, head on the Mt. Fremont Trail, which begins at the north end of the parking area. This is a well-marked trail and begins with a moderate ascent. The hike is approximately 5.6 miles round trip with an elevation gain of about 1,000 feet. Follow the signs for Mt. Fremont Fire Lookout, and enjoy scenic views along the trail. The trail is usually open from late June to early October, but be sure to check trail conditions before your hike.

  • Public Transportation

    While there is no direct public transportation to the Mt. Fremont Fire Lookout, you can take a bus or shuttle service to the Paradise area of Mount Rainier National Park. From there, you would need to find a way to get to the Sunrise Visitor Center, which may require a taxi or rideshare service. Once at Sunrise, you can follow the same hiking instructions as above.
