Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, start from the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park Visitor Center. Head northwest on Washington Street towards the intersection with Route 340. Turn left onto Route 340 and continue for about 1.5 miles. Look for signs directing you to the park’s various trails. Once you reach the parking area, park your vehicle and follow the designated trails toward Split Rock, which is approximately a 1-mile hike from the parking lot. Ensure you have comfortable hiking shoes as the trails may be uneven.

• Public Transportation

  For those using public transportation, you can take the MARC train from Washington, D.C. to Harpers Ferry. The train stops at the Harpers Ferry station. From the train station, it is about a 1.5-mile walk to the Visitor Center at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Once at the Visitor Center, follow the directions provided for car travel to reach Split Rock, which involves a short hike. Be sure to check the train schedule in advance as services may vary.

• Hiking

  After parking your car at the designated area or arriving by train, you will need to hike to Split Rock. Follow the trail markers towards the Maryland Heights Trail, which will lead you toward Split Rock. The hike is moderately challenging, so be prepared for some elevation changes. The total distance from the parking area to Split Rock is about 1 mile, and it typically takes about 30-45 minutes to reach the site depending on your pace.
