Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving, start on the C&O Canal Towpath from any point within the park. If you are near the Great Falls area, head south on the towpath towards Knoxville. Follow the signs indicating Lockhouse 31, which is approximately 20 miles from Great Falls. Once you reach Knoxville, look for Lockhouse 31 at the coordinates 39.3296° N, 77.6806° W. There is a parking area nearby where you can leave your vehicle while you explore.

• Public Transportation

  If you are using public transportation, take a bus from Washington, D.C. to Brunswick, MD. From Brunswick, you can catch a local taxi or rideshare service to get to Lockhouse 31 in Knoxville, which is about 7 miles away. Be sure to check the bus schedule in advance, as service may be limited on weekends and holidays. Once you arrive in Knoxville, you can walk to Lockhouse 31 following the signs along the C&O Canal Towpath.

• Bicycle

  For those who enjoy cycling, you can rent a bike at one of the local bike shops in the area. Start from the nearest bike rental location and make your way to the C&O Canal Towpath. Cycle south along the towpath, which is flat and scenic, towards Knoxville. Lockhouse 31 is roughly a 20-mile ride from Great Falls, so plan your trip accordingly and bring plenty of water and snacks.

  If you are already near a section of the C&O Canal Towpath, you can walk directly to Lockhouse 31. The towpath is a well-maintained trail that provides a scenic walking route.
