Car
If you are traveling by car, start at the New River Gorge Bridge, a prominent landmark in the park. From the bridge, take US-19 South for about 8 miles. Turn right onto WV-39 West and continue for approximately 5.5 miles. Turn left onto County Route 25, which leads directly to Thurmond Depot Visitor Center. After about 3 miles, you will see the visitor center on your right. There is no entry fee to access the visitor center, but parking is available nearby.

Currently, public transportation options are limited in the New River Gorge area. However, you can take a Greyhound bus to the nearest major city, which is Fayetteville, WV. From Fayetteville, you can use local taxi services or rideshare apps to reach Thurmond Depot Visitor Center. The drive is approximately 15 miles and should take around 20-25 minutes. Taxi fares can vary, so it’s advisable to check with the service provider for current rates.

Bicycle
For those who enjoy cycling, you can bike to Thurmond Depot Visitor Center along the scenic roads of the New River Gorge. Starting from the New River Gorge Bridge, follow the same route as for car travel. The total cycling distance is around 16 miles one way, so make sure to bring water and snacks. The roads can be steep, so prepare for a workout. Always wear a helmet and follow local traffic laws.

If you are already in the New River Gorge and prefer a more adventurous route, there are hiking trails that lead toward Thurmond. However, this requires good planning, as the trails can be challenging and may take several hours. The closest trail you might consider is the Long Point Trail, but note that it does not lead directly to Thurmond. You would need to combine this with road walking to reach the visitor center.
