Aviation Industry Update: New Routes and Destinations for 2025

The aviation industry is constantly evolving, and 2025 promises to be a year of exciting new routes and destinations. From transatlantic expansions to increased connectivity in the Asia-Pacific region, airlines are adapting to meet the growing demands of travelers and tourists alike.



Transatlantic Expansion: Dublin to Nashville Takes Flight



Aer Lingus is set to launch a new direct route from Dublin to Nashville, Tennessee, commencing on April 12, 2025. This route will be served four times a week using the state-of-the-art Airbus A321XLR aircraft. The A321XLR's efficiency makes it ideal for thinner transatlantic routes, providing a comfortable and cost-effective travel option.



Nashville becomes Aer Lingus's newest destination in North America and only the third European destination served from its airport. The other destinations are London Heathrow (itish Airways) and Reykjavik Keflavik (Icelandair).



This new service offers a seamless link between the UK, Ireland, and Nashville, offering connections from eight UK airports to one of the fastest-growing cities in the US. Beyond its musical heritage, Nashville is a thriving economic hub for fashion, healthcare, finance, and automotive industries.

Aer Lingus' Dublin-Nashville route will operate year-round, except for a six-week suspension in January and Feuary 2026. Flight EI76 will depart from Nashville at 6:40 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, arriving in Dublin the next morning at 8:50 a.m. The westbound flight, EI77, will leave Dublin at 2:05 p.m. and arrive in Nashville at 5:10, also on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.



Introductory fares for travel anytime between April 12 and May 31, 2025, are available on the new route from €499 return.



Asia-Pacific Growth: Air Canada Connects Vancouver to Manila



Air Canada is introducing its first-ever service to the Philippines, connecting Vancouver and Manila using Boeing 787-9 aircraft. This route marks Air Canada's 12th Asia-Pacific destination from Vancouver, highlighting the airline's commitment to expanding its presence in the region.



The route is significant due to the strong Filipino-Canadian community. The new service will capitalize on the close ties between the two countries, providing a convenient travel option for both business and leisure travelers. The first-ever nonstop flights to Vancouver, itish Columbia will begin on June 4, 2025.

European Footprint: Asiana Airlines Expands to Prague



Asiana Airlines is launching a new route from Seoul Incheon to Prague, utilizing A350-900s. Prague enhances Asiana's European network, joining other prominent destinations such as Barcelona, Frankfurt, Istanbul, London, Paris, and Rome.



This route aims to improve connectivity into Central and Eastern Europe, catering to both business and leisure travelers seeking to explore the rich cultural heritage of Prague and the surrounding region.

United's Unique Asia-Pacific Strategy: Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City via Hong Kong



United Airlines is introducing new daily flights to Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) via Hong Kong. These routes will be serviced using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, employing a unique 'tag flight' network strategy.



The aircraft flow will originate from transpacific flights, connecting passengers onward to these new destinations. This approach allows United to efficiently utilize its fleet and offer convenient connections to Southeast Asia. With these additions, United will now serve 32 destinations across the Pacific, significantly enhancing travel options for customers.

KLM's Summer Expansion: San Diego, Georgetown, and Hyderabad



KLM is expanding its intercontinental network with new services between Amsterdam Schiphol and San Diego, Georgetown in Guyana, and Hyderabad in India.



The launch dates for each route are as follows:



  • San Diego: May 8, 2025, with three weekly flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays using a Boeing 787-9.
  • Georgetown: June 4, 2025, with two weekly flights on Wednesdays and Saturdays using an Airbus A330-200, including a stop in Sint Maarten on the outbound journey.
  • Hyderabad: September 2, 2025, with three weekly flights on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays using a Boeing 777-200ER.

Level Up: Barcelona-based Level Increases Capacity to the Americas



Level will increase capacity on its long-haul routes between Barcelona and the Americas for summer 2025, offering over 652,000 seats. The airline will operate daily flights to New York, Boston, Los Angeles, and Buenos Aires during peak months. A daily frequency for the first time during the summer, while the Santiago de Chile route will reach four weekly frequencies.



The seat increase on South American routes will see a 24% capacity increase. The addition of a seventh aircraft to Level's fleet will support this expansion, strengthening its long-haul operations at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport.

Virgin Atlantic Returns to Canada: London Heathrow to Toronto



Virgin Atlantic is making a return to Canada with a new daily nonstop service between London Heathrow and Toronto Pearson International Airport. This route will be operated using a Boeing 787-9, with an expected annual passenger count of over 165,000.



Each flight will offer a cargo capacity of 20 metric tons, enhancing trade and logistics between the two countries. Virgin Atlantic's partnership with WestJet will provide seamless connections for passengers traveling beyond Toronto.

Jet2.com Adds Samos to its Greek Network



Jet2.com is expanding its Greek network with the addition of Samos during summer 2026. Services will be available from Manchester and London Stansted airports, offering up to two weekly flights from each base between May and October 2026.



Samos will be the 15th Greek airport served by the carrier, catering to the increasing demand for Greek island destinations. Jet2holidays has also launched a range of new hotels located across the laid-back island.

itish Airways Launches New Services to Kuala Lumpur and Tbilisi



itish Airways is introducing new services to Kuala Lumpur and Tbilisi. The airline will operate daily nonstop flights between London Heathrow and Kuala Lumpur using Boeing aircraft.



These new routes are significant for both business and leisure travelers, providing enhanced connectivity to Southeast Asia and the Caucasus region. Service to Kuala Lumpur will begin on May 10, 2025, while flights to Tbilisi will begin on June 2, 2025.

Vietjet Connects Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to China



Vietjet is launching four new nonstop routes connecting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to Beijing Daxing and Guangzhou. The airline will operate daily flights from Ho Chi Minh City to both Chinese cities, with increased frequency of flights from Hanoi to Beijing.



This expansion significantly enhances Vietjet's network in China, catering to the growing demand for travel between Vietnam and key Chinese business and tourism hubs.

Airport Expansion in the US: Megaprojects Taking Flight



Several airport megaprojects are underway in the US, aimed at modernizing facilities and increasing capacity to accommodate growing passenger traffic. These projects include:



  • John Glenn International Airport (Columbus, Ohio): A $2 billion redevelopment project replacing the 1958-era terminal with a 1-million-square-foot facility featuring 36 gates and a 5,000-space parking structure. Construction began in December 2024, with the new terminal expected to open in 2029.
  • Pittsburgh International Airport (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania): A $1.57 billion modernization focusing on sustainability and passenger convenience, featuring a new landside terminal consolidating operations under one roof. The project aims to reduce emissions by 20% by 2028.
  • Tampa International Airport (Tampa, Florida): A $1.5 billion expansion including a new 16-gate Airside D terminal designed for international and domestic flights. The project is expected to increase the airport's capacity to 35 million annual passengers by 2037, with completion slated for 2028.
  • Nashville International Airport (Nashville, Tennessee): Part of the airport's wider 1.4 billion USD expansion plan, includes the addition of new gates, moving walkways, and concessions within the building space. Concourse D's extension will officially be opened to the public on 8 July 2025.
  • Sacramento International Airport (Sacramento, California): A $1.3 billion SMForward program including a pedestrian walkway connecting Terminal B to Concourse B, a 5,500-space parking garage, and multiple terminal expansions. The pedestrian walkway is slated for completion in 2026.
  • Newark Liberty International Airport (Newark, New Jersey): A $2.5 billion project to build a new Terminal A, replacing the existing terminal that was built in 1973. The new terminal is expected to open in 2026.

Auckland Airport's Airfield Expansion



Auckland Airport's airfield expansion is set to open in late 2025, spanning over 23 rugby fields. This expansion will create a new area for aircraft parking, adding extra taxiways and six remote stands for aircraft layovers. The expansion of the airfield and taxiway capacity resumed construction, with an anticipated completion date of late 2025.



The upgrade and expansion of Auckland Airport will allow it to support about $55 billion in economic value from travel and tourism and $41 billion in trade, supporting the Government's aspiration of doubling our country's exports over the next decade.
