What to expect
The confluence of the rivers Mtkvari and Aragvi
Svetitskhoveli sits at the heart of Old Mtskheta and is even more historically significant than Jvari. This is the ‘First Georgian Church’, erected on a spot chosen by Saint Nino herself. It houses dozens of precious relics, including (what is believed to be) Christ’s Mantle, a 4th-century baptismal font, and a piece of cedar wood salvaged from the original structure.
Mtskheta
It is one of the oldest cities in Georgia as well as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the World. Due to the historical significance of the town and its several outstanding churches and cultural monuments, the "Historical Monuments of Mtskheta" became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
State Stalin Museum is situated in Gori, the town where Stalin was born. The complex museum was opened in 1957. In the house, where Stalin was born, the memorial museum was opened in 1937, during Stalin’s lifetime.
Built on a high rocky left bank of the Mtkvari River, it contains various structures dating from the Early Iron Age to the Late Middle Ages and is notable for the unique combination of various styles of rock-cut cultures from Anatolia and Iran, as well as the co-existence of pagan and Christian architecture.
The origins of the fortress date back to the 7th century, when it was built by the Arab conquerors of Georgia. In the 16th century, the fortress was renovated by the Georgian king Rostom, and it was later taken over by the Ottoman Empire in the 18th century.
