What to expect
Bab Boujloud
The structure is a triple-arched gate that makes use of Moorish architectural forms, with pointed horseshoe arches and a crenelated top. Both the inner and outer facades are covered in polychrome tiles featuring arabesques and Moroccan geometric motifs, with the outer facade predominantly blue and the interior facade predominantly green-ish. Strangely, the actual doors of the gate seem to close and lock from the outside; perhaps an indication that the French administration saw it partly as a means of controlling the movement of the inhabitants inside the medina
Dar Batha Museum is located in the heart of the medina, opposite the beautiful Bou Inania. Before becoming a museum in 1915, the building was a beautiful palace of Arab-Andalusian style, built by Moulay el Hassan in the late nineteenth century. This museum is full of treasures that reflect the traditional art of Fez and its region. On the menu: carved wood, embroidery, zellige, wrought iron, jewelry, coins, carpets …The wealth of Fassi craftsmanship is stunning!
The name Bou Inania comes from the first part of the sultan's name Abou Inan. The madrasa functioned both as an educational institute and as a congregational mosque. This is the only madrasa in Fes with a minaret.[2][3] Opposite the main doorway of the madrasa is the entrance to the dar al-wuḍūʾ (ablutions house) for washing limbs and face before prayers. Left and right of the central court there are classrooms.According to history, religious leaders of the Karaouine Mosque advised Abu Inan Faris to build this madrasa. It was the last madrasa to be built by the Marinids. The madrasa became one of the most important religious institutions of Fes and Morocco, and gained the status of Grand Mosque. The madrasa was renovated in the 18th century. During the reign of Sultan Mulay Sliman, entire sections were reconstructed. In the 20th century, major restoration work was performed on the load-bearing structure, the plaster, wood and tiled decorations with Islamic geometric patterns.
Fondouk el-Nejjarine is one of the best known buildings in Fez , Morocco . This fondouk or caravanserai was declared a national monument in 1916 and listed as a World Heritage of Unesco .The three floors currently house the Wood Museum.
The Zaouia of Moulay Idriss II is a zawiya (a shrine and religious complex; also spelled zaouia) in Fez, Morocco. It is dedicated to and contains the tomb of Idris II (or Moulay Idris II when including his sharifian title), who ruled Morocco from 807 to 828 and is considered the main founder of the city of Fes and of the first Moroccan Islamic state. The UNESCO-listed old medina of Fez, and is considered one of the holiest shrines in Morocco.
Mosque and University Kairaouine
It is the oldest existing, continually operating higher educational institution in the world according to UNESCO and Guinness World Records[5][6] and is occasionally referred to as the oldest university by scholars.
Chouara Tannery
Fes’ tanneries consist of several stone vessels that are filled with a range of natural dyes and various liquids. Dozens of men are often in and out of standing waist deep in the vessels, working under the hot Moroccan sun to prepare the animals hides soaking in each vessel. The tanneries work with a variety of different hides from cows, sheep, goat and camel, and turn them into the beautiful leather products you see lining the streets of Fes.
Andalusian Mosque
Andalusian Mosque is a mosque in Fes el Bali, the old medina quarter of the city of Fez, Morocco. The mosque dates back to the inception of the city in the 9th century, with the completion of the initial foundation in 859-860. This makes it one of the oldest mosques in the world. The mosque had been renovated and expanded several times since then. Today, it is one of the relatively few remaining Idrisid-era establishments and the main landmarks of the city.
