The W.A. Gayle Planetarium, nestled in Montgomery's Oak Park, has been a beacon of astronomical education since 1968. Named after former Montgomery Mayor William Armistead Gayle, the planetarium has evolved into a premier destination for exploring the cosmos. The planetarium features a 159-seat theater and a Super MediaGlobe II digital projection system, installed in 2014, which is the world's first full-color single-lens digital planetarium. This system projects simulations of the latest discoveries about our universe, offering breathtaking visuals and immersive experiences. Visitors can embark on virtual journeys to the edge of the known universe, exploring stars, constellations, and planets. The system can also recreate natural sky phenomena such as lightning, clouds, rain, snow and auroras. Beyond the shows, the planetarium offers exhibits, including a one-fifth scale model of the Hubble Space Telescope and images of celestial objects. The planetarium is operated by the Montgomery Zoo for the city of Montgomery. Public shows are offered on Saturdays, and group reservations are available Tuesdays through Fridays.
