Swann Covered Bridge: A Historic Landmark

The Swann Covered Bridge, also known as the Joy Covered Bridge, stands as a testament to early 20th-century engineering and community spirit in Blount County, Alabama. Constructed in 1933 by Zelma C. Tidwell and his crew, the 324-foot-long bridge spans the Locust Fork of the Black Warrior River, connecting Cleveland with the nearby community of Joy.The bridge is a Town lattice truss design, using local pine and oak wood set on concrete piers. This design, favored by Tidwell, was known for its strength. The bridge was originally named the 'Joy Covered Bridge'. Lula Swann, a local landowner, gave the county the right-of-way to build the road and bridge. The community celebrated its completion with a dinner for the workers.Over the years, the Swann Covered Bridge has become a beloved landmark. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. After a period of closure for restoration, it reopened to traffic in 2012. Today, visitors can drive across the bridge and explore the scenic riverbanks, enjoying swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking. Nearby attractions include the Horton Mill Covered Bridge and Easley Covered Bridge, making Blount County a destination for covered bridge enthusiasts.
