Bladon Springs State Park: A Historic Spa Retreat
Discover historic mineral springs and natural beauty at Bladon Springs State Park, a peaceful retreat in Choctaw County, Alabama.
Bladon Springs State Park, located in Choctaw County, Alabama, is a 357-acre park with a rich history dating back to the 1830s. Originally a popular spa destination known as the "Saratoga of the South," the park is centered around four mineral springs once believed to have healing properties. In 1838, James Conner established a spa, attracting visitors from across the country seeking the curative effects of the mineral waters. By 1846, a grand Greek Revival-style hotel was constructed to accommodate the growing number of guests, featuring amenities such as a ballroom, bowling alley, and skating rink. The hotel remained in operation through the Civil War but eventually closed in the early 20th century as the popularity of mineral springs declined. Today, Bladon Springs State Park offers a peaceful retreat with opportunities for camping, picnicking, and birdwatching. Although the original hotel and cottages are no longer standing, the park preserves the historic springs and provides a glimpse into Alabama's past. Visitors can explore the park's trails, relax in the picnic areas, and enjoy the natural beauty of the surroundings.
