Discover more about Gjirokastër Museum

The Gjirokastër Museum, nestled within the historic Gjirokastër Castle, serves as a cornerstone of Albanian history and culture. The museum opened in 2012 and is considered one of the most modern museums in the country with a special design and combination of the narratives and images. The museum's exhibits span from prehistoric times through the Ottoman Empire and up to modern Albania, providing context to the region's role in various conflicts. Traditional clothing, household items, weaponry and military memorabilia are thoughtfully displayed across multiple floors. The second floor is dedicated to military history. The castle itself is a major attraction, with its imposing stone walls offering stunning views. The museum enhances the experience, bringing the castle's history to life through well-preserved structures and artifacts from each era. Visitors can explore the Armory, displaying Albanian arms from independence in 1912 to the end of World War II, and the former prison, offering a sobering look into Albania's past. The prison was used by the Italian and German occupation forces during WWII, and later by the communist regime to hold political prisoners. Located in the heart of Gjirokastër, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the museum is a perfect starting point for exploring the city's Ottoman-era Old Town. Cobblestone lanes, stone houses, and traditional eateries await exploration beyond the museum walls.
