Discover more about Pyramid of Tirana

The Pyramid of Tirana stands as a powerful symbol of Albania's complex history and its ongoing transformation. Originally constructed in 1988 as the Enver Hoxha Museum, the structure was intended to immortalize the legacy of the country's long-time communist leader. Designed by a team including Hoxha's daughter, Pranvera, the Pyramid was reportedly the most expensive structure ever built in Albania at the time, a fact that stands in stark contrast to the widespread poverty experienced by the Albanian people under the communist regime. Following the collapse of communism in 1991, the Pyramid shed its original purpose and went through a series of repurposing, serving as a conference center, exhibition venue, and even a temporary base for NATO during the Kosovo War. For a time, it also functioned as a nightclub and broadcasting station. However, the building eventually fell into disrepair, becoming a canvas for graffiti and a gathering place for the city's youth. In recent years, the Pyramid has undergone a major revitalization, transforming into a modern center for technology, innovation, and culture. Designed by the architectural firm MVRDV, the renovated Pyramid features colorful boxes scattered throughout the structure, housing cafes, studios, workshops, and classrooms. These spaces are home to educational programs like TUMO Tirana, which offers free after-school education in technology-related fields for young people aged 12-18. The redesign also includes staircases along the sloping facades, allowing visitors to climb to the top of the Pyramid and enjoy panoramic views of Tirana.
