Discover more about Pyramid of Tirana

The Pyramid of Tirana, an architectural landmark with a controversial past, stands as a symbol of Albania's ever-evolving identity. Originally constructed in 1988 as the Enver Hoxha Museum, dedicated to the long-time communist leader, the pyramid quickly became a visual representation of the communist regime. Designed by Hoxha's daughter and son-in-law, the structure was said to be the most expensive individual building ever constructed in Albania at the time. Following the collapse of communism in 1991, the Pyramid shed its original purpose and was repurposed multiple times, serving as a conference center, exhibition venue, and even a base for NATO during the Kosovo War. For a time, it was left in disrepair, becoming a canvas for graffiti and a subject of debate regarding its demolition. However, many Albanians saw it as a symbol of victory over the regime and protested its destruction. In 2018, a project was initiated to transform the Pyramid into a youth IT center called TUMO Tirana, focusing on technology, computer programming, robotics, and startups. The renovation, completed in May 2023 by MVRDV, has turned the Pyramid into an 'open sculpture' with colorful boxes housing cafes, studios, workshops and classrooms. Visitors can now climb the sloping facades via staircases, reaching the top for panoramic views of the city. The Pyramid of Tirana stands as a testament to Albania's ability to adapt, innovate, and preserve its complex history.
