Discover more about Ax-les-Thermes

Ax-les-Thermes, a picturesque spa town in the Ariège department of the French Pyrenees, has drawn visitors for centuries with its therapeutic hot springs. The town, situated at an elevation of 700 meters, boasts stunning views of the surrounding mountains and a tranquil atmosphere. The history of Ax-les-Thermes is deeply intertwined with its thermal waters. The Romans first recognized the healing properties of these springs, and in the Middle Ages, they were used to treat skin diseases, particularly among soldiers returning from the Crusades. In 1260, the Count of Foix, Roger IV, built a leper hospital and the Bassin des Ladres (Leper's Pond). The town's thermal waters, some of the hottest in the Pyrenees, emerge from the earth at temperatures between 72°C and 77°C. Today, Ax-les-Thermes remains a popular spa destination, offering a range of treatments for rheumatism, respiratory problems, and other ailments. Visitors can soak their feet in the Bassin des Ladres, a public pool filled with naturally warm, sulphurous water. For a more comprehensive spa experience, Les Bains du Couloubret offers modern facilities with thermal baths, saunas, and jacuzzis in a Roman-inspired setting. Beyond its thermal baths, Ax-les-Thermes provides ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. In the winter, the Ax 3 Domaines ski resort offers over 70 kilometers of pistes for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. During the summer, the surrounding mountains and valleys are ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and paragliding. The nearby Orlu Valley, with its wildlife park and natural reserve, is a scenic highlight. The town itself exudes a quaint charm, with narrow streets, old stone buildings, and a relaxed ambiance. Visitors can explore the Église Saint-Vincent, a 12th-century Romanesque church, and stroll along the river that runs through the town center. The local cuisine features hearty Pyrenean dishes such as cassoulet, garbure, and fresh trout.
