Getting There

  • Car

    If traveling by car from Hereford, AZ, head east on AZ-92 S for approximately 8 miles. Turn onto Miller Canyon Road (FR 56) or Carr Canyon Road (FR 368), depending on your chosen trailhead. Continue on the dirt road to the trailhead parking area. Note that FR 56 is a narrow dirt road, and high-clearance vehicles are recommended. There is no fee for parking at the trailheads.

  • Public Transportation & Hiking

    To reach Miller Peak Wilderness via public transportation, take a bus to Sierra Vista, AZ. From Sierra Vista, a taxi or rideshare can take you to the Coronado National Forest entrance (approx. 12 miles). From there, hike approximately 5 miles on Forest Road 368 to reach the Miller Peak trailhead. Ensure you have appropriate hiking gear and sufficient water. Encompassing over 20,000 acres, the Miller Peak Wilderness is a rugged and beautiful area located between Sierra Vista and the Mexican border. Designated in 1984, it's named for Miller Peak, the highest in the Huachuca Mountain range and the southernmost peak in the United States. This wilderness is characterized by sheer cliffs, deep canyons, and diverse life zones, creating a sky island effect with dramatic changes in elevation and vegetation. The wilderness boasts over 170 species of birds, including 14 hummingbird species, making it a birdwatcher's paradise. Seventy-eight species of mammals, such as coatimundi, javelina, and mountain lion, and over 60 species of reptiles also call this area home. Visitors can explore over 21 trails, including the Arizona Trail, which traverses the wilderness. The Crest Trail leads to the summit of Miller Peak, rewarding hikers with breathtaking views. Evidence of past mining and ranching activities can be found throughout the area, adding a historical dimension to the natural beauty. While much of the area was once cloaked in pine and fir forests, wildfires have transformed the landscape, resulting in a mix of oak, aspen, and grass vegetation.
