Discover more about Hot Well Dunes Recreation Area

Hot Well Dunes Recreation Area is a unique destination in southeastern Arizona, approximately 35 miles from Safford. This 2,000-acre area features rolling sand dunes, remnants of a lake that existed approximately two million years ago. Today, it's a haven for off-highway vehicle (OHV) enthusiasts and those seeking relaxation in natural hot springs. The area is open to all types of OHVs within the fenced boundary, offering both low, sparsely vegetated dunes for leisurely rides and larger dunes for adventurous riders. Outside the fenced area, OHV use is permitted on existing roads and trails. Hot Well Dunes is also home to artesian hot springs, discovered in 1928 when drillers seeking oil accidentally tapped into a pocket of hot water. The water, reaching 106 degrees Fahrenheit, is pumped into two hot tubs, offering a soothing experience after a day of dune riding. The remains of the original drilling equipment can still be seen near the entrance road. The recreation area provides ten campsites with fire grills and vault toilets. Dispersed camping is also allowed, excluding parking areas and areas around the hot tubs. Visitors should bring their own water and firewood, as these are not available on-site. The area is generally accessible by all types of vehicles, though the road can be rough. Visitors can also enjoy picnicking, photography, and stargazing. Please note that public nudity, firearms, and archery are prohibited. Pets must be leashed, and a speed limit of 10 mph is enforced in certain areas. Camping is limited to 14 days within a 28-day period.
