Discover more about Lookout Studio

Lookout Studio, also known as The Lookout, is a historic building located on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, within Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Designed by architect Mary Colter and completed in 1914, the studio was commissioned by the Santa Fe Railway to serve as a place for Grand Canyon visitors to rest after a hiking excursion. Colter, who also designed other landmark structures in the area, intended the building to mimic the dwellings of the indigenous Puebloan people and blend into the rocky landscape of the South Rim. The studio's exterior is constructed of jagged, irregular native rocks, giving it the appearance of being a natural extension of the canyon rim. The parapet rooflines and stone chimneys mimic the irregular shapes of surrounding bedrock. Inside, visitors will find multiple windows offering different perspectives of the Grand Canyon, as well as a gift shop selling art prints and souvenirs. Telescopes are available on the outdoor terrace for closer observation of the landscape. Lookout Studio is more than just a viewpoint; it's a piece of Grand Canyon history. It was built to compete with the Kolb Studio, another photography studio located nearby. For many years, it served as a community gathering place where visitors could swap stories and watch mule riders on the Bright Angel Trail. Today, it continues to offer a unique and memorable experience for all who visit.
