Discover more about Mather Point

Mather Point, located on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, is often the first stop for visitors and provides an unforgettable introduction to this natural wonder. Named in honor of Stephen Tyng Mather, the first director of the National Park Service, the point offers expansive views stretching over 30 miles to the east and 60 miles to the west on a clear day. From this vantage, you can see the Colorado River winding its way through the canyon, Phantom Ranch nestled at the bottom, and various trails crisscrossing the landscape. The viewpoint features two overlooks with safety rails, perched on rocks that extend into the canyon. Visitors can marvel at the colorful rock layers, including the Kaibab Limestone, Coconino Sandstone, and Vishnu Schist. To the east, prominent formations like Wotan's Throne, Brahman, and Zoroaster Temples rise majestically. Stephen Mather, a wealthy conservationist, played a crucial role in establishing the National Park Service in 1916. He believed in preserving natural landscapes while promoting tourism and providing visitor comforts. In line with this vision, the Canyon View Information Plaza opened near Mather Point in 2000, offering visitor information, a bookstore, and exhibits. Recent improvements include a rim-side amphitheater and a medallion honoring the tribes associated with the Grand Canyon.
